EXPERIENCE: Job History
2006-Present: Director of Marketing and Communications, Denver Public Works
Hired to create a strong marketing and communications structure for one of Denver's largest and highest profile departments, ultimately transforming a non-responsive and reactive agency into a prolific, proactive community partner and voice of authority on all public works issues.
Communications Highlights
- Fielding and tracking ongoing media, citizen and City Council inquiries daily.
- Identifying and distributing information on key issues impacting Denver's residents; proactive public relations resulted in $5million in positive earned media in 2011.
- Leading the strategic process creating messaging for responses to inquiries as well as messaging for proactive outreach.
- Acting as department spokesperson whenever needed in a confident and accessible manner.
- Able to utilize a global, strategic understanding of city agencies, policies, standards and systems when dealing with complicated media inquiries that cover multiple city agencies.
- Created a communications position, Manager of Legislative Services, to focus on legislation and Council issues, including ensuring that Public Works issues are solidly represented at all commitee meetings, Council meetings and neighborhood meetings.
- Centralizing Council and legislative communications provides better customer service for our elected officials and minimizes this work load for internal subject matter experts and staff. Having this position report to the Communications department guarantees consistent messaging with Council, the community and the media.
Marketing Highlights
- Identified programs and initiatives with the potential to benefit from signature marketing campaigns, ultimately actualizing those campaigns and breaking new ground for City departments. See "Campaigns" for full detail.
- Negotiated strategic public/private partnerships for several key Public Works initiatives, including a partnership with King Soopers as the retail partner for Denver ParkSmart Cards (the first ever partnership of this type); Denver McDonald's restaurants displayed counter cards with the Public Works snow removal brochures in all metro restaurants, and McDonald's also provided free offer incentives and offset costs on our street sweeping brochure.
- Recognized dated imaging on parking meter stickers and refreshed them with a contemporary look; applied to all 5,200 meters in the City.
